Jewel's Block

I have no doubt that some dogs know us humans better than we know ourselves. Here at Brick House the 82 pound yellow labrador—Jewel-- that greeted many of you when you came to visit was just such a dog.

Jewel had a quiet, gentle way of getting to know you…to sidle up beside your knee and drop a hint for you to rub her ears… softer than velvet.  Oh, she was happy if you had a treat, but she’d never beg, especially from someone she was just getting to know.

So, in her way Jewel usually became the center of attention…She drew humans around her like a bonfire of silent affection.  To her chosen family she offered herself as a clown when she sensed her people needed a laugh.  She was there with support when she knew we were sad.  She brought people together in a way that we humans rarely achieve.

Jewel was at home everywhere on the farm, but there was one spot she seemed to like the most: right in front of the Brick House beside a block of young Gamay Noir vines.  From there she had a sweeping view of the vineyard, the woods and the valley below.

After she left us-- just five days short of her 17th birthday-- we named that tiny quarter acre block in the heart of the farm—the center of attention--  “Jewel’s Block.” We hope you enjoy her very special wine…
